Theresa Francis

Meet Theresa Francis, an office aid for Desert Knolls Elementary School. Whether she is finding a lost sweater, delivering a lunch or making copies for a teacher, Theresa has touched many people in her community. This week she received the
President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunteer service for 4000 hours volunteer work.
When did you start volunteering?  I started volunteering four years ago.
Why do you love volunteering? I love volunteering for children because whenever you are having a bad day all you have to do is look at a child’s face and your day is good again. Children light up your world.
What motivates you to serve? I want to give back to others that have given back.
What are your goals for the future? I want to be a music teacher.

 Olivia Puckett

When did you start volunteering with DCUW? I went to a project leader's meeting in August of last year, after deciding to volunteer somewhere other than with a local pageant group I was a part of. After that, I didn't really get started until the beginning of this year, when I began helping with Read to Kids.

Why do you love volunteering? To me, volunteering is the optimal way of learning from others while fulfilling my own civic responsibility of contributing to the community that houses me. So much can be learned from others, whether it be acceptance or a new way of thinking.

Describe your most memorable experience with DCUW. My most memorable experience would have to be the February Read to Kids. The children that came were all very interesting, and it was so rewarding knowing that we were not only encouraging reading but also encouraging service by sending Valentine's Day card to Sterling Commons Alzheimer's residence. All of the children were very interesting and fun to work with, and there was so much going on. We were making cards, reading, and leading the children in a scavenger hunt that the Hesperia Branch Library graciously set up for us.

What motivates you to serve?
The wonderful experiences coupled with the impact I am making and hope to make in the future motivate me to serve. At each event, I am ready to step up and learn how to become a part of something larger than life. The events in which I have participated so far were fairly small, yet that is a good start to becoming a part of something significant.

What impact area are you most interested in helping and why? I am interested in helping any service area that I can. Overall, I would really enjoy being able to make an impact in the areas of homelessness/hunger, animals, seniors, the environment, and the arts.
